History of the Church
The Church was constructed by Mr. Francis Correa nearly thirty years ago. According to the locals, he made a regular trip to the Bhate Bunder, the coast.
Correa got the idea to start the Church after sitting by the cross of Brother Herman, a Missionary who taught the area’s children for over 150 years.
To accommodate the massive crowd of worshippers who came to visit, particularly during the annual celebration between August 29 and September 8.
The Church was remodeled to a modern and big one in 2000. The straightforward yet elegant layout of the structure and its panoramic waterfront site is an architectural marvel. The extensive background decoration of the altars dedicated to Jesus Christ and Our Lady of Velankanni creates a stunning look. The interiors are comparatively simple but elegantly display beauty and charm.
How to Offer Mass at the Shrine
Offering and Mass for intentions and Souls can be booked at the entrance of the church. Rs. 50 is for weekdays and Rs. 100 for mass on Sundays.
How to Reach Mata Velankanni Shrine – Uttan
You can reach the shrine by Railway or by Road. Follow Google Maps if you have your vehicle. However, the most economical way is to use the local bus service, buses 1, 2, and 6.
You can come to cross over from Marve creek to Manori and take Bus No. 6 to Uttan Naka. From here, share Auto takes around Rs. 10 per person. Or Rs. 50 for the full Auto Rickshaw.
